How to Chat With Strangers Online Safely: 12 Rules That Work
By the Bakkar team · 17 October 2026
Talking to new people online can be the best part of your week. A few habits make sure it stays that way. These are the rules we'd give a younger sibling.
Protect your details
- Keep the chat in the app at first. Moving to WhatsApp or Instagram early gives a stranger your number or handle, and with it your photos, contacts and more. Good people are happy to wait.
- Never share your exact location, address, college hostel room or office. A rough area is plenty. On Bakkar others only ever see a rough distance or your area name.
- Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, bank details or card numbers. No genuine person needs them. Anyone asking is running a scam, whatever the story.
Spot the usual scams
- The sudden emergency. A new friend with a hospital bill, a stuck parcel or a blocked account who needs a "small transfer". Always a no.
- The investment tip. Crypto, trading or a "task job" that pays at first and then asks you to deposit more. Block and report.
- The video call trap (sextortion). Someone pushes for a video call, records it, and threatens to share it unless you pay. Don't take video calls with strangers. If it happens, don't pay: stop replying, keep the evidence, and report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
- Too good, too fast. Instant intense compliments, a story that keeps changing, and a refusal to ever talk normally are red flags.
Think before you share photos
- Assume anything you send can be saved and forwarded. Screenshots are forever. Don't send anything you wouldn't want seen by everyone.
- Check what's in the frame. House numbers, uniforms, ID cards and the view from your window give away more than you think.
Use the tools
- Block and report early. You don't owe anyone a conversation. On Bakkar, every profile, chat, Adda message and Buzz post has report and block, and blocking hides you from each other completely.
- Use apps with safety built in. Look for message requests, limits on links and numbers from strangers, approximate location, and in-app account deletion. Bakkar's first message from a new person is a request that can't contain links or numbers until you reply.
Meeting in person
- Public place, tell a friend, your own ride. Meet somewhere busy, share the plan and a live location with a friend, get there and back on your own, and leave whenever you want.
If something goes wrong
- Emergency: 112
- Women Helpline: 181
- Cyber crime, fraud or blackmail: 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in
It's never your fault when someone else behaves badly. Report it, and talk to someone you trust. See all the ways Bakkar keeps you safe.
